Edmund II the Ironside, King of England

Edmund, the son of Aethrelred II and Elfleda of York , was born in about 990.
In 1015 he married at Malmesbury Abbey, Wiltshire, Ealdgyth of Wessex.

Edmund II

Called Ironside because of his physical strength. While still a prince he attempted to defend Northumbria against the Vikings, but in 1016 he lost a battle with their leader, Canute. Despite the defeat, he was elected King by London nobles on the death of his father, Aethelred.

In October 1016 he fought Canute again at Ashingdon, Essex. The following month he died, possibly assassinated. He was buried in Glastonbury Abbey, and was succeeded by old enemy, Canute.
